Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 4 February
to 7 am 5 February 1998

The volcano has again been active overnight. There were many rockfall signals throughout the night with one period of near continuous large rockfall or small pyroclastic flow signals between 1:40 and 2:30 this morning. These signals are believed to have been caused by activity on the Galways side of the dome.

Intermittent light ashfall has occurred in most occupied areas north of the volcano throughout the night. Conditions are hazy in these areas due to the suspended ash in the atmosphere and this could make driving hazardous. Ash masks should be worn outdoors or in ash conditions at all times.

Residents are reminded to remain alert and listen to ZJB radio for further information
