Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 1 February
to 6 pm 2 February 1998

Activity at the volcano was quite similar to yesterday and was again dominated by rockfall signals. Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 10 hybrid earthquakes, 2 volcano-tectonic earthquake, 2 long period earthquakes and 68 rockfall signals. The rockfalls mainly occurred in three distinct periods; around 8 to 11 pm last night, 6 to 8 am this morning and from 2 to 4 pm this afternoon. Such cyclic activity has been seen many times at the volcano before and is typical of active dome growth, which is still occurring on the southwestern side of the dome.

No visual observations of the volcano were possible today due to low cloud.

A GPS occupation was conducted of the LEESNET today. The results from this occupation is currently being processed and would be reported at a later date.

Dust levels at all monitoring stations remained low today.

People should remain alert and listen to Radio Montserrat for further information.
