Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 26 January
to 6 pm 27 January 1998

Seismic activity remained at a low level today. Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there was 1 hybrid earthquake, 31 rockfall signals and 6 volcano-tectonic earthquakes. Most rockfalls occurred between 10 pm and midnight last night, and the vts all occurred within a small swarm around 3 am this morning. The vts were located at shallow depths beneath the crater.

A long occupation GPS survey was undertaken today between Harris Lookout and Tar River Estate House - the results are currently being processed. No observations of the upper parts of the dome were possible today due to low cloud, although steam production was high from the eastern flank.

Work continues on bringing more broadband stations on line and a new site was initiated on South Soufriere Hills to improve seismic coverage of the volcano.

Dust levels at monitoring stations were again low today except for one station in Woodlands which has slightly raised levels.

People should remain alert and listen to Radio Montserrat for further information.
