Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 17 January
to 6 pm 18 January 1998

Seismic activity at the volcano today has again been low. Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 5 hybrid earthquakes, 16 rockfall signals and 4 long-period and 3 volcano tectonic earthquakes.

Visibility has been reasonably good today. Minor rockfall activity was noted in the White River valley, adding material to the talus slope beneath the growing dome. A very prominent steam plume with light ash was visible coming from the top of the volcano. This plume was estimated to be about 8,000 to 10,000 feet and drifted north west.

An EDM survey was undertaken today between Garibaldi Hill, Lees Yard, Water Works and MVO South. The results of this survey should be available tomorrow.

Dust levels at all of the monitoring stations across the island were low today.

People should remain alert and listen to Radio Montserrat for further information.
