Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 8 January
to 6 pm 9 January 1998

Activity at the volcano today was slightly lower than that of yesterday. Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 17 hybrid earthquakes, 26 rockfall signals, 2 long-period earthquakes and 11 volcano-tectonic earthquakes. The 6 to 8 hour cyclicity of recent days appears to have continued today, although the amplitude of the peaks appears to be smaller.

Cloud continues to mask the upper parts of the dome. However, seismic rockfall activity suggests continued dome growth in the Galway's sector. No visual observations were possible today due to the heavy rainfall.

Professor Steve Sparks (Bristol University) and Ms. Caroline Choux (University of Clermont-Ferrand) both left Montserrat today after working as chief scientist and junior volcanologist respectively.

Air quality at all monitoring stations across the island is good today.

People should remain alert and listen to Radio Montserrat for further information.
