Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 5 January
to 6 pm 6 January 1998

Activity at the volcano today remains similar to that of the last few days. Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 43 hybrid earthquakes, 68 rockfall signals and 10 long-period earthquakes. Higher activity continued to follow a roughly 6 to 8 hour cycle, with today's peaks in activity occurring, approximately, at 10 o'clock last night, 7 o'clock this morning and 3 o'clock this afternoon. There was a good deal of ash associated with this afternoon's pulse in activity but it blew out to sea over Plymouth. Cloud has blocked any view of the dome today.

Air quality at all monitoring stations across the island is good today.
