Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 30 December
to 6 pm 31 December 1997

Seismic activity at the volcano has again been low today. Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 22 hybrid earthquakes, 2 long period earthquakes, 8 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 26 rockfall signals. The cycle in hybrid activity has increased in period so that the events are grouped at intervals of around 8 hours.

Cloud has again covered the top of the volcano all day and so there have been no good views so far of the crater formed by the Boxing Day collapse. Rockfalls can, however, be seen coming out of this crater and it is assumed that a new dome is growing inside.

Air quality at all monitoring stations across the island is good today.

People should remain alert and listen to Radio Montserrat for further information.
