Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 23 December
to 6 pm 24 December 1997

In addition to rockfall signals, which have been dominating the seismic record for weeks now, there was a slight increase in hybrid earthquake activity today. 61 hybrid earthquakes 38 long period earthquakes, 2 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 46 rockfall signals were recorded over the 24 hours ending at 4 o'clock this afternoon. The hybrid earthquakes did not occur in a swarm but were scattered throughout the day, the amplitude of the individual hybrids was higher today than has been the case recently.

The south side of the dome was observed today from the police launch with the help of officers Earl Daway and Cornelius Pierre. This confirmed that the whole of the southern face continues to be active. Continuous small rockfalls were seen which have eroded gullies in several places. As the dome continues to grow over a wide area pyroclastic flows could be gener ated down any of the major valleys leading from the volcano.

Air quality at all monitoring stations across the island is good today.
