Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 13 November
to 7 am 14 November 1997

Seismic activity has remained moderate overnight with continued hybrid earthquakes and very low amplitude tremor. The hybrid earthquakes are typically several minutes apart, yet some of them are quite large. There have also been several rockfall signals overnight. It is not possible to say where exactly these have occurred until an observations flight can be made today. It is likely that most activity is taking place on and around the new dome above Galways in the south west sector of the volcano. Nevertheless, much of the older dome complex is also composed of unstable material so rockfalls and pyroclastic flows may travel down ghauts on any flank of the volcano. Everyone is advised to listen to Radio Montserrat for any new information.
