Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 12 November
to 6 pm 13 November 1997

The poor visibility today has again hampered visual observations. Cloud level was low and steaming could be seen from the base of the October 22nd dome above Tuitt's ghaut.

The level of seismic activity has been moderate today and there has been a slight increase in the number of hybrid earthquakes since yesterday. The hybrid earthquakes are still quite small but there have been occasional larger earthquakes. During the afternoon some low amplitude tremor developed which is ongoing at the end of the reporting period. There have been several rockfalls today, these probably occurred on and around the new dome above the Galways area. The continued hybrid earthquakes, tremor and rockfalls suggest that the dome is still growing. In the 24 hours up to 4 o'clock this afternoon there were 253 hybrid earthquakes, 12 long period earthquakes and 29 rockfalls.

Further rockfalls and pyroclastic flows are likely in any of the ghauts around the volcano but especially in the White River valley. The growth may switch to a different sector of the volcano at any time.
