Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 11 November
to 7 am 12 November 1997

The seismic activity was again at a low level last night with only occasional small hybrid earthquakes. There were also a number of rockfall events throughout the night. It is likely that most of these are being produced on the new dome above Galways although there is also unstable older dome material on all sides of the volcano. This unstable material along with new dome material may collapse to form pyroclastic flows which could travel down ghauts on any flank of the volcano. A substantial dome collapse could also initiate further explosions. Everyone is advised to remain alert and keep listening to Radio Montserrat for any new information.
