Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 5 November
to 7 am 6 November 1997

Seismicity has remained at a raised level overnight. The hybrid earthquake swarm which began on the evening of the 4th continues, but overnight the earthquake signals were dominated by high amplitude tremor on all of our seismic stations.

The high level of seismicity at the moment means there is a high possibility of more pyroclastic flows, which may well come to the North. In addition, there is a chance that the volcano will start having explosions again. In these conditions Friths, Old Towne and Salem are not safe places to live.

In the event of an explosion or ashfall residents are reminded that they should not attempt to drive, but should get indoors and remain under the shelter of a strong roof. Residents should also wear a dust mask if there is ash in the air. Everyone is advised to remain alert and keep listening to Radio Montserrat for any new information.
