Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 31 October
to 7 am 1 November 1997

Seismicity from the volcano has continued to be dominated by hybrid swarms. Overnight there were two of these - between 3:30 and 9 o'clock yesterday evening and from 3:30 this morning to now, at 7 o'clock, when the current swarm continues. These swarms were longer than other recent swarms and contained more events. There were a few small rockfalls overnight - both during and between the swarms.

More pyroclastic flows, at least as big as those seen yesterday, can be expected today. There is also a chance that the volcano will start having explosions again. In these conditions Friths, Old Towne and Salem are not safe places to live. Everyone is advised to remain alert and keep listening to Radio Montserrat for any new information.
