Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 24 October
to 7 am 25 October 1997

The volcano has been relatively quiet overnight. There have been several hybrid earthquakes and a number of small rockfall signals during the reporting period which are probably associated with continued growth of the new dome inside the explosion crater.

Larger rockfalls and pyroclastic flows associated with dome growth can now be expected on all flanks of the volcano. Also more explosions could occur at any time - whether individual events or another prolonged sequence. Friths, Old Towne and Salem are not considered to be safe with the activity in its current state.

There is still a lot of ash on the roads and the wearing of ash masks is recommended in ashy conditions. Everyone is advised to keep listening to Radio Montserrat for information on the activity.
