Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 23 October
to 7 am 24 October 1997

The volcano has been relatively quiet overnight. It now looks as if the sequence of explosions that started on September 22nd has come to an end. There were several hybrid earthquakes overnight which may indicate the continued growth of the new dome inside the explosion crater.

There was a small pyroclastic flow signal recorded just after midnight and pyroclastic flows associated with dome growth can now be expected on all flanks of the volcano. Also more explosions could occur at any time - whether individual events or another prolonged sequence. The people remaining in Friths, Old Towne and Salem are not safe with the activity as it is.

There is still a lot of ash on the roads and the wearing of ash masks is recommended in ashy conditions. Everyone is advised to keep listening to Radio Montserrat for information on the activity.
