Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 16:00 20 May
to 07:00 21 May 1997
The current alert level is ORANGE

The volcano is quieter this morning. The latest hybrid earthquake swarm ended at about 6:15 pm, and this was followed by another period of small pyroclastic flows between 7 pm and 9 pm. Since then there has been a low level of activity, with a few small pyroclastic flows.

The dome is partially clear this morning, and so some views should be possible.

Further pyroclastic flows are likely today. Due to the switch in the area of dome growth in the last few days, the northern side of the volcano is becoming more dangerous. People should stay away from the ghauts on the northern and north-east side of the dome, and visits to the central corridor should be restricted to those that are absolutely essential. The Tar River and Long Ground areas are extremely dangerous, and should not be entered.

The emergency siren system will be tested as usual this afternoon between 3 and 6 pm.
