In 1857, Captain Charles Scammon discovered a lagoon in Baja California, Laguna Ojo de Liebre where gray whales went to calve. The shallow water of the lagoon made the gray whale easy prey for the whalers. A drastic decline in the gray whale population resulted. As whaling declined the gray whale returned to the perfect calving site. In the 1990 Mexico and International interests realized the uniqueness of the area and made a gray whale sanctuary (Parque Natural de la Ballena Gris). One hour from a salt mining town Guerrero Negro is park was truly amazing. We camped on some sand dunes by the water. We fell asleep to the 1200 gray whales breathing. We all visited the calving sites on small skiffs with guides. The Mother's and Baby's seem playful around us. We end the great side trip by eating heuvos rancheros and watching whale's spy hop (a why for whale to check what is going above the water's surface).
