Ruapehu Volcanic Activity 

Situation Summary

As of 0900h the situational status is;

*     Volcano seismicity has remained near pre eruption levels for most of
the night.  Some A-type (high frequency) volcanic earthquakes have been
recorded near Dome on the summit. No discrete eruption-related earthquakes
have been recorded since 0100h 30 September.

*     No reports of eruptive activity have been received. The last lahar
producing event was the 0840h event on 29 September (some 72 hours ago)
and the last explosive eruption 0100h 30 September (57 hours ago). The
longest quiescent period during the last week was about 23 hours from
Monday evening to Tuesday evening .

*     Should weather conditions become suitable we will be running
observational and COSPEC flights. Other field parties will include seismic
servicing, lahar deposits and ashfall groups.

Conclusions and Alert status

The Alert Level for Ruapehu remains at Level 4 but will be reviewed as
field party data becomes available today.
