(MODIFIED from Jon Fink's comments during the Rabaul crisis)

It is perhaps worthwhile to remind those reading about ongoing
volcanic eruptions that the messages we are forwarding are not
guaranteed to be accurate. Eruptions are exceedingly dynamic
phenomenon with a dearth of first-hand information by qualified
scientific observers coming out to the rest of the world. This
situation is improving with communications with the appropriate
volcano observatories, and hopefully better reports will start
to arrive soon as communication lines get re-established. But
those of you in the media (or talking to same) should keep in
mind these uncertainties.
