summit elevation 2800 m

An explosive eruption occurred at Bezymianny volcano on the Kamchatka
Peninsula beginning yesterday at 0500 KST (Julian day 278, 1700 UTC). This
eruption generated an ash plume to a height estimated at 10,000 meters
(33,000 feet) above sea level. The ash plume moved in a direction
eastnortheast from its source. Based on satellite images, this event had
ended by 0600 UTC, Julian day 279. The ash plume has significantly diffused
to the degree that it is no longer detectable on satellite images.

This will be the last report on this eruption. AVO will continue to monitor
the situation in cooperation with the National Weather Service and the
Institute of Volcanic Geology and Geochemistry in Petropavlovsk, Kamchatsky.
Notification will be issued should additional eruptive activity occur.
