Work is continuing on the volcanic hazards page for Vesuvio. Other changes are rather cosmetic and not worth being included here.

Tuesday 16 January 1996

Wrote a new page listing all volcanoes active in 1995. This page consists of sections arranged geographically, giving short descriptions of the volcanoes and their activity. Where available, links to other WWW sites regarding the respective volcano and its 1995 activity are made.
Tatsuro Chiba merits special thanks for making his beautiful photos of Kuju available on this site.

Sunday 14 January 1996

Reorganized many pages of this site (including the title page and this page, as you will see at its bottom), added text and photos mainly to the Vesuvio files (see, for example, the now-finished chapter on the 1631 Vesuvio eruption, a chapter about volcanic hazards at Vesuvio and new images in the chapter about the1631-1944 eruptive cycle).
Added a brief paragraph about renewed activity at Kuju (from news on 14 January).
The Stromboli photo gallery covering the decade 1985-1995 has been broken down into smaller, and thus more convenient, pages dealing with individual periods.
More info is available about the 1991 eruption of Avachinsky, Kamchatka and the volcano itself.
Added links to a spectacular Arenal site and to French Volcano Observatories.

Wrote a summarizing description of the A.D. 79 eruption of Vesuvio and scanned images of Vesuvio in eruption in 1872, 1906 and 1944.
The first part of a description of the 1631 Vesuvio eruption is also available.

Added photos of Vesuvio during and after its 1944 eruption, scanned six beautiful Stromboli photos by Marco Fulle (Osservatorio Astronomico, Trieste, Italy), taken on

29 May 1992,
4 June 1992,
8 June 1993,
17 June 1994,
20 June 1995,
and of the craters in June 1993.

Chapters on the eruptive history of Vesuvio are under construction but need a lot of further work.

Added photos of Karymsky in eruption, 1970 and 1976
Added photos of Vesuvio's 1631 and 1694 eruptions and of Stromboli (a pyroclastic avalanche in 1901, a Strombolian explosion in 1901, a view of an ash emission in 1926 and the 1930 lava flow. Most of these photos have still to be worked into the text, but you can already enjoy them here.

Significantly re-organized the Vulcano page which now has information on the geological evolution of Vulcano island, the eruptive history of the Fossa cone, Vulcano (see 5 January entry), a list of historic eruptions at Fossa and Vulcanello cones, the 1985-1995 unrest and Volcanic hazards.
Added links to CNN which frequently has news, photos and movies of volcanic eruptions (once they occur), the Alphabetic Web Volcano Index of the TOMS Volcanic SO2 Home Page and the new Alaska Volcano Observatory home page.

Added a geological map of Stromboli and wrote explanation of the geological map of Salina
Made links to Volcanoes and Volcanology Resources by Online Resources for Earth Scientists (ORES) , Volcanology at Indiana State University (by Shanaka de Silva).

Added a page with photo about recent activity at Bromo (Tengger caldera), Indonesia

Made lots of new links to amazing new sites, such as the Volcano Research Center of the Earthquake Research Institute, Tokyo, a new Kuju homepage of the Geological Survey of Japan's Volcanology Section
Wrote background info about Vulcano and added geologic map and photo of 1888-1890 eruption.
