Indonesian volcano erupts

JAKARTA, May 17 (UPI) _ More than 60 families have been evacuated from danger areas near an erupting volcano on the remote Indonesian island of Nias.

The 1,800-feet (600-m) Mount Hili Aludo on the island of Nias off the west coast of Sumatra about 650-miles (1,000 km) northwest of Jakarta, erupted on Tuesday. By late Friday, the volcano still was belching rocks and burning particles.

Nias' district chief Zakaria Lafau (Zah-kah-ree-ah Lah-fah-oh) says there have been no reports of fatalities, but residents in nearby areas are worried about possible violent eruptions of Hili Adula volcano.

This week's eruption is the first by Hili Adulo in about 40 years.

Hili Adulo is among 128 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which has the highest density of volcanoes in the world. Of the active volcanoes, 65 are listed as dangerous.
