Calbuco from north

Distant view of Calbuco from north
(Full picture JPEG: 75K) Calbuco viewed from north with Lago Llanquihue in the foregorund. Note that the highest part of the mountain is made up of an older, "somma"-like feature with the active crater lying in the left part of the snow-covered summit plateau.

Calbuco summit area Summit plateau of Calbuco with somma and active crater
(Full picture JPEG: 75K) This view of the summit area of Calbuco (from the southeast) shows the somma rim in the left background and parts of a larger older crater in the foreground, forming a snow-filled plateau with a diameter of approximately 1-1.5 km. The position of the active crater is indicated. The smaller of two lava flows extruded in 1961 overflowed onto the SE flank through the snow-covered low in the old crater rim in the foreground.

Summit and active crater of Calbuco
(Full picture JPEG: 78K) Zoom on Calbuco's summit plateau while approaching the volcano from SE. The 1-1.5 km wide summit crater is filled with snow; active crater is partially snow-free.

Calbuco's active crater The active crater of Calbuco revealed
(Full picture JPEG: 98K) A glimpse into the crater created by the explosive final phase of the 1961 eruption when this pit was blasted out of a lava dome formed in an earlier stage of the eruption. The pit is between 50 and 100 m wide and free of snow in its eastern and southern parts. Although not visible in this reproduction, the original slide shows very weak fumarolic activity in these areas. View is towards south. Note the pronounced ridges below the crater in the foreground; these are the levees of the upper part of the northern lava flow of 1961.

(Full picture JPEG: 88K) Northern view of the volcano showing the summit plateau, the somma (right) and the larger of the two 1961 lava flows (outlined in red) which flowed down the north to NNE flank, reaching a total length of about 6 km.

Calbuco and its 1961 lava flow
(Full picture JPEG: 98K) Impressing view of Calbuco with the N-NNE flank lava flow of 1961 distinctly showing in gray. The flow has well-developed levees. Note dense forest around the flow's terminus.

1961 lava flow

Terminus of 1961 lava flow
(Full picture JPEG: 175K) Close-up of the 1961 lava flow terminus on the NNE flank of Calbuco. Note lateral levees, and tumuli and pressure ridges on the flow.
