Personal Statement

• Remote sensing is a rapidly growing field of geology with many new and exciting applications - this is especially true in volcanology where it is impractical , impossible, or simply too dangerous for study of explosive eruptions except by remote techniques.

Research

• volcanic emissions of sulfur dioxide, for both individual eruptions and global-scale trends
• merging of wind trajectory models and remote sensing data to produce 3-dimensional reconstructions of drifting volcanic clouds
• study of gas and solid interactions within drifting volcanic clouds
• Watershed geochemistry in the Lake Superior basin
• Antarctic continental weathering under ice-free conditions, and the effect on marine geochemistry
• tropospheric aerosols
• natural hazards mitigation using the total ozone mapping spectrometer (TOMS)
• the center of environmental remote sensing education for engineers and scientists at Michigan Tech
