The College of Engineering has announced that Professor John Gierke has accepted a one-year appointment as interim chair of the Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences.
Gierke takes on the duty while Chair Wayne Pennington serves as a Jefferson Science Fellow with the US Department of State.
Gierke received his bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering and his doctorate in environmental engineering from Michigan Tech.
He joined the faculty as an assistant professor in 1990 and was promoted to associate professor in 1996 and to professor in 2009. He is involved in international interdisciplinary research in contaminant removal and water-resource evaluation. He has attracted over $6.5 million in research funding and is currently the project director for a $2.3-million NSF grant under the Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) program.
He received the Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year Award in 2007 and the GSC Mentorship Award in 2006. He has advised 33 graduate students and has authored over 50 publications. He created Tech’s first environmentally focused enterprise, Aqua Terra Tech, and serves as advisor in its hydrological consulting and research efforts.
Tim Schulz, dean of the College of Engineering, said Gierke's record of accomplishment and dedication to the development of outstanding academic and research programs make him "well-suited" to lead the department during Pennington's absences. |
