East Africa Seminar with Dr. James Wood

A GEOLOGIC SAFARI TO THE KENYA RIFT VALLEY - HOT SPRINGS, SODA LAKES & RHINOS

This seminar will focus on a visit Dr. James Wood made to the Kenya Rift Valley this past August. He will discuss some geologic problems involving the unique soda lakes in the Kenyan Rift Valley, including the origin of the lakes and their relation to carbonatite volcanoes. The lakes also host flamingos in great numbers, rhinos in slightly less numbers as well as blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) and extremeophile bacteria. The Rift Valley is an ideal place for student work and students may want to study this unique area. The format of the talk will be mostly travelogue with some good geologic problems interspersed.

Location and Time:
U 113 M&M Building 4-5 pm, Monday October 11
