Welcome ...
... to the Michigan Technological University Africa Study Abroad program. The program for 2010 will run from January 20 to April 30 and will be located in two African countries, South Africa and Kenya. The program focus will be on aspects of Earth Science and Reef Ecology and is intended for students with interests in these areas, either for a major/minor or for students seeking to fulfill science requirements. The content of most courses includes labs and should satisfy science requirements at most colleges and universities, but please check to be sure; see  course descriptions).
The purpose of the program is to introduce students to sub-Saharan Africa, one of the most vibrant, interesting and colorful places in the world. Our stops include the famous East Africa Rift Valley in Kenya, the spectacular Archean geology of South Africa and the famous Kenya coastal reefs and the reefs off the Florida Keys. This course offers the student an opportunity to study these features firsthand in the field under the guidence of experienced geologists.
We start the course with two weeks in the Florida Keys in mid-January, studying the reefs in-situ and in the world-famous Windley Key quarry. We then proceed to Cape Town in South Africa for 7 weeks and conlcude with 5 weeks in Kenya studing the rift valley and the modern reefs near Mombassa. One week is set aside for spring break between travel from South Africca to Kenya. See chart below.
