Graduate Research Assistantship at Michigan Technological University (MTU).
We invite applications for a Ph.D research assistantship in the Paleomagnetic Research Group at Michigan Tech. Our research group interests include the long-term evolution of the Earth's magnetic field and its geological and geodynamical implications; global plate tectonics; environmental magnetism and magnetism of rocks and minerals. The assistantship will focus on the study of morphology, intensity, and stability of the geomagnetic field in the Precambrian as recorded by 2.9-2.4 Ga mafic rocks in Western Australia. The successful applicant will be involved with field work, laboratory experiments, data interpretation and analysis, and participation in professional meetings.
Applicants should have a degree in geophysics, geology, or a related discipline. Current funding (from the NSF and MTU) is available for up to four years. The position includes a competitive stipend, tuition, and travel to national conferences and field sites. The position may begin as early as Jan 1, 2008 and is open for US and international applicants.
