Stratocumulus Clouds

Stratocumulus clouds are generally found under a large storm cloud. Waves form at the top layer of cold air on which the clouds "ride".

Other varieties include:

Stratocumulus stratiformis

This type of stratocumulus cloud is an immediate indicator of bad weather from a sprinkle to heavy precipitation. If these clouds are at the head of a cold front, gusty winds or thunder showers may follow.

Stratocumulus opacus

This type of stratocumulus cloud brings similar weather as the Stratocumulus stratiformis.

Stratocumulus at sunset

This type of stratocumulus cloud is characterized as low water clouds of dark Indian red color. These may bring precipitation in 12 to 20 hours if winds from NE to S. Other wind directions bring overcast skies.

Stratocumulus at sunset

This type of stratocumulus cloud is characterized as low to middle water clouds with gold, pink, amber, lavender or rosy backrounds. These indicate no precipitation is likely within 20 to 24 hours.
