Effects on the water sustems for the Kobe and Northridge quakes were estimated at $715 and $50 million respectively. By following developed response plans the disasters effects on these systems are greatly minimized.
- The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California was able to scarcely prepare for the Northridge quake.
- The MWDSC drew experience from the Sylmar quake of 1971, as well as other recent quakes.
- It purchased at the most cost-opportune times, heavy equipment capable of fabricating, removing and installing large pipes necessary for such a disaster.
- The MWDSC was prepared to operate self sufficiently in their repair efforts.
- Municipal utility districts from many major California cities have entered into emergency response networks with each other. The red tape is thereby avoided, and immediate efforts can be made where it counts, turning the water back on.
