WHAT TO DO DURING THE STORM
When a watch is issued
Hurricane watches are issues about 36 hours in advance of the storm and
indicate that conditions are right for the hurricane to hit your area. In the
event of a hurricane watch you should :
- Pay attention to the TV or radio for updates
Make sure your gas tank is full and your car is in good working order
- Stock up on canned and dried food
- Check disaster kit and place in car in case of evacuation
Make sure you have fresh water, all medication, and special supplies
(diapers, baby food, a favorite blanket)
Don't forget ID
- Secure mobile home anchors
- Prepare to board up windows and doors
- Secure or move boats
- Bring in lawn furniture and other loose items which are outside
- Have extra cash and important paper in waterproof container or in a safe
deposit box at the bank (marriage certificates, wills, and insurance papers)
- Prepare to evacuate if you live in a mobile home, on the coast or barrier
island, in a flood plane, or in a high-rise building
When a warning is issued
Hurricane warnings are issues about 24 hours before the hurricane is
predicted to hit your area.
- Pay extra close attention to the TV or radio for updates and evacuation notices
- Board up doors and windows
- Finnish storing any loose items which are outside
- Use phone only for emergencies
- Turn up refrigerator to maximum and don't open unless necessary
Evacuation
- If told to evacuate do so.
- If you live in a mobile home or area which will be affected by flooding,
evacuate anyway.
- Notify friends or family members where you are evacuating to.
- If possible leave during the daylight hours.
- If going to a shelter, leave food and water for pets, as they are not
allowed in shelters.
- Fill bathtub with water so that you have clean water when you get
back
- Make sure you bring your disaster kit and important papers with you
- Lock up house before you leave
If you can not evacuate in time or if you decide to stay home
- Move valuables to upper floors
- Fill many containers, including bathtub with water
- Turn off utilities if told to do so
- Unplug small appliances
- Turn off propane tanks
- Stay downwind and away from all doors and windows
Do not be fooled by the eye of the storm, and do not return to or exit your
home until the all clear is given
