Future Plans for Flood Prevention
Presently, the cities of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks are
deciding which type of system to install along the river in order to make
a more secure,"flood-proof" environment. The United States Army Corps
of Engineers has been assisting in the development and design of several
different options.
As of February 12th, the Corps released their flood protection study
findings and recommendations to the cities of Grand Forks and East Grand
Forks. The City of Grand
Forks' Flood Protection Information Page discusses these
recommendations and is updated frequently to best inform people of
the short and long term goals to be accomplished.
North of Grand Forks on the Red River lies the city of Winnepeg,
Canada. In the 1950's, Winnepeg was faced with a similar problem to the
one Grand Forks is now facing. In 1965 the Manitoba
Floodway was constructed to divert potential flood waters around
Winnepeg. Since then, the floodway has saved the city 18 times, and it
is estimated that several billion dollars in property damage has been
saved since its first use in the spring of 1969. To better understand
how the floodway actually works click here.
