Defense Structures

When deciding on which defense structure to construct the following factors should be considered:

• Type of hazard
• Avalanche path directon
• Economic aspect
• Type of avalanche
• Esthetic consideration

The shape of the defense structure must be considered as well as the material used:

• Straight
• Curved
• Earthen material

Many avalanche areas do not require extensive defense structures but rather velocity reducing structures:

• Earthen mounds
• Structural breakers
• Reforestation
