Economic Impacts of Avalanches in the U.S.

According to the Panel on Snow Avalanches there has not been a comprehensive study of the economic impact of avalanches in the United States. Nonetheless, avalanches can cause considerable damage and result in economic loss for both the private and public sectors. The impact can be divided into direct costs and indirect costs (NRC, 1990).

Direct Costs

  1. maintenance
  2. restoration
  3. replacement
  4. property damage or loss
  5. loss of human life and productivity

Indirect Costs

  1. reduced real estate value either due to impending avalanche hazard or zoning ordinances
  2. lower forest productivity
  3. decreased industrial productivity
  4. mitigation
  5. reduced access to recreational areas
  6. litigation
