Mandan Esker

Silver River Gorge
Mandan Esker
Bete Grise Esker

A remarkable location here where the various elements of the Keweenaw are present and clearly shown in the landscapes.  You can see the ridges caused by dipping lavas of the Portage Lake Volcanics, the trace of the Keweenaw Fault, which makes a striking line across the peninsula, the flat lying Jacobsville terrain, remnants of glacial deposits mantling the older rocks with eskers, kames and outwash, and finally old lake level areas in the Bete Gris wetlands and Pointe Isabelle.

It appears that the Silver River Gorge and the Mandan and Bete Grise eskers are somehow related, perhaps cogenetic subaerial and subglacial features.
