The gravel quarries that have successful operation are often ones built where outwash deposits are fairly thick. The outwash process sorts till into layers of sands, silts, cobbles. The rock materials are typically local rocks, sandstone and basalt, with exotic rocks added from far away. At the Hancock Quarry, most of the outwash is used up, but they are still digging around the edges, and you can see the fluvial stream deposits in the quarry walls.
