Michigan Tech Newfoundland Geology Field Trip
Coming Soon!

GeoUndergraduates:

FROM: Buddy Wylie

I am reminding you of this new course since registration is coming up
next week.

This is a field course, it does not overlap with any other
field courses you take in the summer such as geologic or geophysical
field camp. This course can count toward your geo electives since it is
at the 4000 level or as a free elective (see your Advisor or Kelly
McLean if you have questions).

You enroll for one hour in the Spring 2004 where we plan and read about the geology for the trip and then 3 hours for summer 2004 when we take the actual trip (approximate dates August 3 through 23, 2004, 19- to 21-days); [just before Fall semester 2004 starts].The $700 lab fee covers our expenses for the trip (see detail below).

To register for this course take 1 credit of GE4931, CRN 13936, Special Topics in Geology for the Spring semester 2004 by Wylie and 3 credits of GE4931 (CRN to be announced) for Summer Session, 2004.

Permission of the Instructor is required to register for this course
along with a strong desire and commitment to go to the field to see
geologic features. Participants are expected to take both the classroom
and field excursion parts of the course.

GeoStudents:

I will be offering a class and field excursion course covering the
geology of Labrador and Newfoundland, Canada that will meet by
arrangement for one hour per week in the Spring semester, 2004.
Participants will then take a 19- to 21-day field excursion by van to
Labrador and Newfoundland in August 2004 (approximate dates August 3 through 23, 2004); [just before Fall semester 2004 starts].

The geology of Labrador and Newfoundland is awesome and spectacular. We will see fantastic outcrops of thrust faulted and folded rocks, mantle rocks, carbonate debris flows, iron ore deposits, and ophiolites to name just a few along with glacial features, sedimentary rocks, fossils, and great silicate and ore minerals! Visit the following Geological Association of Canada web site to get an idea of the geology and features of the stops we will be making -
