Residuals between, extruded volume, ∆VE, and collapsed volume ∆VC provide important clues as to the stability of the dome (fig. 5 b, c). When the residual, ∆Ve - ∆Vc, is small, wasting keeps abreast with extrusion, when the residual is large, voluminous masses of coherent lava are accumulating.
