Sandbars

Seen through the transparent lake water, offshore bars have formed at Eagle River. These are  ephemeral features on some shorelines, seasonal on some and essentially permanent on others.  They form on the bottom where the depth reaches less than about 6 meters. They tend to form ridges parallel to the coastline.

Eagle River

Ephemeral sandbars offshore of Five Mile Point, just east of the lighthouse. The bars show up as tan bands superimposed over conglomerate ridges which strike ENE, oblique to the shoreline and show up are dark colored features that appear to underlie the sandbars.

Raised shorelines are thought to represent former sandbars, no longer actively forming, but now above the waterline. They are evidence for changing lake levels.
