Nancy Auer has been conducting research in the field of fisheries since 1978 and since coming to Michigan Tech in the mid-1980s she has focused on Lake Sturgeon in the Sturgeon River. Her work informed the FERC re-licensing agreement for the Prickett Hydroelectric Dam (Baraga Co.) in 1990 and since that time Lake Sturgeon populations here have substantially grown. Our local population of Lake Sturgeon is one of only 2 populations in the US waters of Lake Superior which remain self-sustaining. Other Lake Superior populations have been extirpated, or severely impacted by barrier dams.  Climate Change and the growing need for clean energy (Hydropower) continues to place Lake Sturgeon populations throughout their range in jeopardy.
